Question
Short Answer Essay Questions A studnet rolls a ball bearing down a ramp to a flat frictionless table and off the table to the floor. The table's height is 1.2 meters, the mass of the ball bearing is 01 kg, and the final velocity down the ramp has vertical and horizontal components of 1.2 m/s. What is the resultant final velocity of the ball down the ramp? How long does it take for the object to hit the ground? What is the force of gravity on the ball after it has left the table while it is in the air? (please draw a free body diagram) What is the initial velocity of the ball bearing as it leaves the table? Where does the student need to place the target so that the ball will land in the middle? What will be the Net force on the object will it is rolling across the flat table? What is the Normal force applied by the table?Explanation / Answer
i] resultant final velocity v = sqrt(1.2^2+1.2^2) = 1.70 m/s answer
ii] By second equation of motion in vertical, h = 0.5 gt^2,
t = sqrt(2h/g) = sqrt(2*1.2/9.8) = 0.495 s
iii] Force of gravity = mg. = 0.01*9.8 = 0.098 N
It acts downward on the ball.
iv] v = 1.7 m/s because KE will be same as that at bottom of ramp
v] d = vt = 1.7*0.495 = 0.8415 m from the base of table
vi] Net force is zero. Normal force = mg = 0.098 N upward
