Question

In the circuit below, a parallel combination of a 10.0-2 resistor and a 7.0 mH inductor is connected in series with an R 9.3-2 resistor, a 9.0-V dc battery, and a switch. 7.0 mH 10.0 (a) What are the voltages across the 9.3-52 resistor and the 10.0-2 resistor, respectively, immediately after the switch is closed? V10.0 = (b) What are the voltages across each of these resistors after the switch has been closed for a long time? V10.0 = (c) What is the current in the 7.0-mH inductor after the switch has been closed for a long time?

Explanation / Answer

a)

equivalent resitance R eq = R1 + 10 = 19.3 ohms

current in the circuit I = e/Req = 9/19.3 = 0.47 A

V9.3 = I*9.3 = 0.46*9.3 = 4.3 v

V10 = I*10 = 0.47*10 = 4.7 V

=============================

b)

after long time no curretn flows through 10 ohms

since the inductance has zero resistance

current i = e/R = 9/9.3 = 0.97 A

V9.3 = i*9.3 = 0.97*9.3 = 9 V

V10 = 0

=================

c)

i = 0.97 A
