Question

In the circuit below, a parallel combination of a 10.0-? resistor and a 7.0-mH inductor is connected in series with an R = 7.5-? resistor, a 8.0-V dc battery, and a switch. After the switch has been closed for a very long time, it is opened.

(a) What is the voltage across the 7.5-? resistor immediately after the switch is opened?
b) What is the voltage across the 10.0-? resistor immediately after the switch is opened?
This is not solved by
a. L act as a open circuit
V(7.5 ohms) = 7.5/17.5 * 8 = 3.42 V
b. V (10 ohms) = 8- 3.42 = 4.57 V

Explanation / Answer

after long time: L acts as short circuit hence as soon as switch is opened L shorts the 10 ohms resistor and hence voltage across 10 ohms is 0 V Voltage across 7.5 ohms = 8V
