Question
Environmental authorities need to evaluate two transportation options for the daily movement of 1000 passenger between Damietta and Aswan (1100km). The evaluation will be based merely on CO2 emissions and the options are as follows:
- Option A: Using high speed electric train powered by a natural gas-fueled (mainly methane) power station. Where the energy density of natural gas is 53.6 MJ/kg and the total efficiency of this electric train system is 32%.
- Option B: using jet planes that are fueled with a 42.8 MJ/kg energy density jet fuel with a total system efficiency of 28%.
If the power consumption per passenger is equal in both option (1MJ/100km),
i- What is the relative CO2 emissions of these two systems and which option do
you think the Environmental authorities will take? [5 grade points]
ii- What is the absolute daily value of CO2 emissions of your chosen system [5
grade points]
iii- Comment on emission concentration in each system [2 grade points]
Explanation / Answer
Amount of co2 released by combustion of
Natural gas: 53.07 Millions Btu
Jet fuel: 70.90 million Btu
Standard emission chart.
Basing on these emission of co2 we can clearly prefer the option A which is high speed train for travelling of 1000 passengers. And also the system efficiency is better that planes which uses jet fuels.
