Questions (4 pts): 1) From your observation involving the prism, which color is bent the most (i.e. deviated the most from the incident direction) after passing through the prism? (You can now appreciate why they call it total internal reflection.) the index of refraction of red light versus violet light?Explanation / Answer
1. from analysis of the prism, the blu colour light is bent the most after passing through the prism
This agrees with the fasct that glass has more refractive index for low wavelengths and hence more bending for blue light
2. For a block, the outgoing rays are always parallel to the incopming rays if the interfaces of the outgoing and the incvoming light are parallel
3. for angles less thant thetac, the light is not totally internally reflected and hence the brightness of the reflected light falls to bare minimal
for angles more then thetac, the brightness of the reflected beam stays fairly constant
4. red light has larger critical angle
this shows that red light will have lower refractive index in the medium as compared to bluke light which has lower critical angle and higher refractive index
