Question
Consider two sections of wires with currents as shown.
Select T-True, F-False. If the first is T and the rest F, enter TFFFF.
A) The magnetic field of the long wire points into the paper at the location of the short wire.
B) The force on the short wire due to the long wire is toward the right.
C) If the short wire were free to rotate about its fixed center (P), from the position shown, its inital rotation would be counter-clockwise.
D) If the short wire were moved further away from the long wire, the net force on it would be smaller.
E) If a positively charged particle were placed at rest at point P (i.e. sitting just outside the short wire), it would feel zero force from magnetic fields
Explanation / Answer
A. form the right hand rule, magnetic field on the long wire point out of the page at the locaiton of the short wire
hence False
B. as the magnetic field is out of page and the curent is to the top, from the left hand rule the force on the short wire is to the right
hence True
C. Force on theshort wire will decrease with increase in distance form the long wire. so the part below P experiences more force to the right thant hte part above P and hence the wire would initiall move counterclockwise. Hence True
D. AS force is proporitonal to magentic field which is inversly proportioanl to the distance, fartehr the wire smaller the force
hence True
E. Any particewl cloase to point P will fell two different forces dow to two different magentic fields which do not add up to zero hence false
