Question
Chapter 34, Problem 067 Lenses with given radli. Object O stands in front of a thin lens, on the central axis. For this situation, each problem in the table (below) gives object distance p, index of refraction n of the lens, radius r of the nearer lens surface, and radius r2 of the farther lens surface. (All distances are in centimeters.) Find (a) the image distance i and (b) the lateral magnification m of the object, including signs. Also, determine whether the image is (c) real or virtual, (d) inverted from object O or noninverted, and (e) on the same side of the lens as object O or on the opposite side. +69 1.61+38 38 (a) Number Units (b) Number Units Show Work is REQUIRED for this question: Open Show WorkExplanation / Answer
a)
From
1/f =(n-1)[1/r1 - 1/r2]
1/f=(1.61-1)[1/38+1/38]
f=31.15 cm
from thin lens equation
1/f =1/p +1/i
1/31.15 = 1/69 +1/i
i=56.78 cm
b)
Magnification is
M=-i/p =-56.78/69
M=-0.823
c)
since image distance is positive ,the image is Real
d)
since magnification is negative means image is inverted
e)
The image is on the side opposite from the object
