A Carnot engine operates between temperatures 350K and 290K. A.)How much heat must be given to the engine to produce 2100 J of work? B.)How much heat is discarded to the cold reservoir as this work is done? A Carnot engine operates between temperatures 350K and 290K. A.)How much heat must be given to the engine to produce 2100 J of work? B.)How much heat is discarded to the cold reservoir as this work is done? A.)How much heat must be given to the engine to produce 2100 J of work? B.)How much heat is discarded to the cold reservoir as this work is done?Explanation / Answer
Given:
Temperature of hot reservoir = T1 = 350 K
Temperature of cold reservoir = T2 = 290 K
Efficiency of the carnot engine = [ (T1 - T2 )/ T1 ] x 100 = 17.1428 % = work done/heat supplied = 2100 / heat supplied
so, heat supplied = 2100 / 17.1428 % =12250 J
b. Heat discarded to the cold reservoir = Heat supplied - work done = 12250 - 2100 =10150 J
