You are standing in the middle of the Pegula Ice Arena (right after the Zamboni made the ice essentially frictionless). Your friend bounces (elastically) a small rubber ball off your back. Right after the ball bounces off of you, its momentum is: A. many times smaller than yours B about one half as large as yours C. about equal to yours D. about twice as large as yours E. many times larger than yours 6. A mass m is released from rest from the top of a ramp with coefficient of friction pu. The mass

Explanation / Answer

Answer is E

Let the mass of the ball is m1 and mass of the man is m2. Initial and final velocities of the man is u2 = v2 = 0

initial and final velocities of the ball is u1and v1

from the formula v1 = (2m1u2)/(m1 + m2) + (m1 - m2 )u1 / (m1 + m2)

= 0 + (m1 - m2 )u1 / (m1 + m2)

= - u1 since ( m2 > m1)

hence the balls momentum is m1v1 = m1u1

and man's momentum is m2v2 = m2 x 0 = 0

ie. ball's momentum is many times larger than yours
