Question
The power is generated by a DC power facility at a voltage of 10 V and deliver by two power lines with resistance Rline=3 ohm. The maximum power the voltage source can deliver is 5 W.
a) Find the total power delivered by this DC voltage source
I used P=IV, where I =V/R when you plug it in the power equation P=V^2/R=(10V)^2/(6 ohm)= approx 17W
b)Find the power lost due to resistance heating in the wires
Requiv=6 ohm, then P=I^2R=(1.66A)^2x(6ohm)=approx 17 W
Are these two supposed to be equal? the power delivered and the power dissipated due to the resistance?
Explanation / Answer
maximum power delivered is mentioned to be 5 W and these two transmission line dont form a closed circuit.there must be some load connected at the receiving end. hence the current in the lines get restricted by the maximum power developed in the wires i.e. 5W/10V=0.5 amp. so power lost =0.5^2 *6=1.5 W
