Question

a study was done in which a group of volunteers was asked to remember either a two digit number or a seven digit number, then walk across the hall to another room and write down that number. while walking down the hall, each of the volunteers encountered a person who offered them either a calorie rich piece of chocolate cake, or a healthy piece of fruit. the people who were asked to recall a two digit number overwhelmingly selected the fruit, while the people who were asked to recall a seven digit number overwhelmingly selected the cake. what parts of the brain are influencing these decisions ?

Explanation / Answer

There are two forms of memory--long term memory which stores information over long periods of time and short term memory which involves tracts of signaling in different cells of the brain over small time periods as well their remembrance. The PFC(pre-frontal cortex) of the brain maintains the short term memory for the remembrance of 2 to 7 digit number after repeated recollection and repetition according to the model of Baddeley and Hitch whereas the dorsofrontal part of of the pre-frontal cortex recollects, updates, manipulates and modifies the work done by this region and provides the output in the form of thinking, action, regular work behaviour and social interactions.

region code for two digit numbers--This group of people have a perception and reward centre acceptance for fruit cake only but people remembering the seven digit phone number selected the chocolate cake as reward perception as chocolate contains chemical CAFFEINE which is present in coffee also and it stimulates the nictonic receptors present in various parts of the brain and leads to an activated reponse with increased attention and concentration.
