Question
6. A cylindrical glass column of length 30cm and radius 2cm is packed with sand is connected to 2 reservoirs at the inlet and outlet.
There are 3 cases:
Case A: h1 = 50cm, h2 = 30cm, h3 = 50cm, h4 = 10cm
Case B: h1 = 50cm, h2 = 10cm, h3 = 50cm, h4 = 30cm
Case C: h1 = 50cm, h2 = 30cm, h3 = 40cm, h4 = 40cm
a = 0 and a = 15 cm
For each of these cases:
(i) Decide whether the problem deals with hydrostatics or hydrodynamics
(ii) Plot the elevation head, pressure head and total heads along the length of the soil column. Draw figures and mark the datum you have chosen.
(iii) For Case A and a = 15 cm, plot pressure, elevation and total heads along the length of the column when datum is chosen to pass through (i)A (ii)B (iii) C. Comment on the differences in terms of total head and pressure head.
