Question
Two soil sandy-silt-clay, A and B have the same particle size distribution curve. Soil A is micaceous with an average grain relative density of 2.80, and has a high plasticity in its fine fraction. The ground quartz-feldspathic B is, with an average relative density of 2.65 and fine grains of low plasticity. Based on this information, ask:
a) it would be possible to say if one of these soils is potentially more compressible than the other?
b) it would be expected that these two soils, when saturated, have different humidities?
Explanation / Answer
A)As soil A has relative desity of 2.80 , and has high plasticity ( hence higher liquid limit ) as compared to soil B
hence soil A will be more compressible than soil B
b) YES they will have different humidities
