Question
The available airspace can be dictated by the shape of the final landform, which depends on the base area or ‘footprint’ of the landfill, the slopes of the sides, the final landfill height and the type of loading. Determine the footprint of a landfill where the following parameters apply. The landfill life is to be 25 years, currently serving a population of 20 000. The current solid waste generation per capita is 3.0 kg/day. The estimated compacted density of the waste at the site is between 350 kg/m3 and 600 kg/m3 and it was determined that the amount of compacted waste 1 000 000 m3. The minimum buffer zone to the landfill should be 300 m. Assume a volumetric ratio of cover material to compacted waste of 1:4.
Explanation / Answer
Percapita Solid waste generation = 3.0 kg/day
Population of the city = 20,000
Daily solid waste generation = population * percapita generation = 20000*3 = 60 tons/day
Total solid waste generated in 25 years = 60*365*25 = 547500 tons
It is given that amount of compacted waste is 1000 000 m3 the density of waste will be 547500000/1000000 = 547.5 kg / m3
Assuming a 10m height of landfill area required for 25 years = 1000000/10 = 10ha
Providing 40% extra area for buffer zone transportation etc total area of land fill = 14 ha.
