Question

In the circuit at right, the battery has a voltage of 6.0 V, and each of the two resistors labeled R has a resistance 20ohm. What is the current in the circuit and the potential difference across the 10ohm resistor when the switch is open? When the switch is closed? Explanation / Answer

a)

when the switch is open ,equivalent resistance

Req =10+20=30 ohms

Total current flowi=0.2ng is

I=E/Req =6/30 =0.2A

Current through 10 ohms resistor is

I10=0.2 A

potential difference across 10 ohms is

V10=0.2*10=2V

b)

when switch is closed ,the equivalent resistance

Req =10+(1/20 +1/20)-1=20 ohms

Total current

I=6/20=0.3A

Current through 10 ohms resistor is

I10=0.3A

Voltage across 10 ohms is

V10=0.3*10=3 Volts
