Question
5) As we discussed in class, the formula for the wavelength emitted or absorbed by electrons making a transition in a hydrogen atom is given by = z2Ru n1 n2 Where Z is the number of protons in the nucleus. This can be easily modified to treat transitions in helium ions. In a Hatom one has, for example One electron n-2 n=1 Z-1, one proton A helium ion (helium normally has two electrons, but we are removing one) looks like this One electron n=2 n=1 Z-2, two protons a) Calculate the wavelength for a transition from n = 4 to n = 3 in the helium ion as shown above.Explanation / Answer
Solution:
From the Rydberg eqn., we have:
1 / = Z2RH(1/n12 - 1/n22)
=> 1 / = 22*(1.097x 107)*(1/32 - 1/42) [RH = 1.097x 107 m-1; Z = 2 = number of protons in helium ion]
=> 1 / = 2133055.55
=> = 4.68*10-7 m (Answer)
