Question

Consider the following figure. Note: The currents are not necessarily in the direction shown. (Assume R1 = 28.0 , R2 = 4.5 , and V = 33 V.)

Find the current in each resistor of the figure above by using the rules for resistors in series and parallel.

Write three independent equations for the three currents using Kirchoff's laws: one with the node rule; a second using the loop rule through the battery, the 4.5- resistor, and the 24.0- resistor; and the third using the loop rule through the 28.0- and 24.0- resistors. Solve to check the answers found in part (a

Explanation / Answer

using kirchoff's law

according node rule

I2 = I1 + I24 ...... eq1

now in upper loop

I1*R1 - I24*24 = 0

I1*28 = I24*24 ....... eq2

now in lower loop

I2*R2 + I24*24 - V = 0

put value of I2 from eq1

I1*R2 + I24*R2 + I24*24 = 33

I1*4.5 + I24*52 = 33

now put value of I1 from eq2

(I24*24/28)*4.5 + I24*52 = 33

I24*55.86 = 33

I24 = 0.59 amp

I1 = 0.59*24/28 = 0.505 amp

I2 = 0.59 + 0.505 = 1.095 amp
