Question

In the circuit below, consisting of a battery and several capacitors, some quantities are known and some are not. The capacitors were completely uncharged before the battery was attached and we are considering the static situation. (Be sure to keep at lcast 3 sig. figs in your answer for all parts of this problem.) Known Quantities: .Q1-8.7x 106 c . C1-55x 10*F . C-2.9 x 10F Energy stored on C2 is W-4x 10*j A) What is the potential difference across C B) What is the potential difference across C2? C) What is the potential difference across C3 D) What is the charge Os on capacitor C3? 03-

Explanation / Answer

(a)

Voltage across C1,

V1 = Q1 / C1 = 8.7*10^(-6) / 5.5*10^(-6)

V1 = 1.58 V

(b)

W2 = C2^2 * V2^2 / 2

voltage across C2,

V2 = sqrt (2*4*10^(-6) / 2.9*10^(-6))

V2 = 1.66 V

(c)

Since, C2 and C3 are in parallel.

so, voltage across C3,

V3 = V2 = 1.66 V

(d)

Q2 = C2*V2

Q2 = 2.9*10^(-6)*1.66 = 4.816*10^(-6) C

Charge on C3,

Q3 = Q1 - Q2

Q3 = 8.7*10^(-6) - 4.816*10^(-6)

Q3 = 3.88*10^(-6) C
