Question

In the circuit below, consisting of a battery and several capacitors, some quantities are known and some are not. The capacitors were completely uncharged before the battery was attached and we are considering the static situation. (Be sure to keep at least 3 sig. figs. in your answer for all parts of this problem.)

Known Quantities:
Q1= 9 × 10-6 C
C1= 8.4 × 10-6 F
C2= 2.2 × 10-6 F
Energy stored
on C2 is W2= 4.9 × 10-6 J
A) What is the potential difference across C1?
V1 =

B) What is the potential difference across C2 ?
V2 =
V Help Enter

C) What is the potential difference across C3 ?
V3 =

D) What is the charge Q3 on capacitor C3 ?
Q3 =

Explanation / Answer

A) the potential difference across C1 is

V1 = q1/c1 = 9 × 10-6 / 8.4 × 10-6

V1 = 1.07 v

B) the potential difference across C2 is

given W2= 4.9 × 10-6 J and 2.2 × 10-6 F

w2 = Q^2/2c

therefore Q2 = 4.64 x 10-6 c

V2 = Q2/c2 = 4.64 x 10-6 / 2.2 × 10-6

V2 = 2.11 V

c) the potential difference across C3 ?
V3 = 1.07 V
