Question
5. Beams of high-speed electrons can be produced in an "electron gun" using electric fields to accelerate the electrons. (a) What acceleration would an electron experience if the gun's electric field were 3.00 x 10*NC? (b) What speed would the electron attain if the field accelerated it through a distance of 0.1 cm? (assume the initial velocity is zero) (c) If the particle was a proton instead of an electron and it was being accelerated by a field of the same magnitude what speed would the proton attain in the same distance? (m 9.1 x 10"kg, m, -1.673x10" kg.) (d) If a neutron were placed into the same field, what would its acceleration be? (m-1.675 kg)Explanation / Answer
a) acceleration = F/m
= qE/ m
= 1.6*10^-19*3*10^4 / 9.11*10^-31
= 5.26*10^15 m/s2
b) v^2 = u^2 + 2as
V^2 = 0 + 2*5.26*10^15*0.1*10^-2
V = 3.25*10^6 m/s
c) if it was a proton a= 1.6*10^-19*3*10^4 / 1.67*10^-27
= 2.87*10^12 m/s2
V^2 = 2*2.87*10^12*0.1*10^-2
= 7.58*10^4 m/s
d) nuetron does ot have any charge so it's acceleration will be zero
