Question
Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. A race car starting from rest accelerates at a constant rate of 6.90 m/s2. What is the velocity of the car after it has traveled 1.05 102 ft? m/s EXERCISE HINTS: GETTING STARTED | I'M STUCK! Suppose the driver in this example is now moving with speed 32.6 m/s, and slams on the brakes, stopping the car in 4.6 s. (a) Find the acceleration assuming the acceleration is constant. m/s2 (b) Find the distance the car travels, assuming the acceleration is constant. m (c) Find the average velocity. m/s
Explanation / Answer
Exercise ;
A)
Acceleration, a = - v/t = -32.6/4.6 = -7.09 m/s^2
B)
Distance, x = u t + 0.5 a t^2
= 32.6 x 4.6 + 0.5 x -7.09 x 4.6^2 = 74.98 m
C)
average velocity = distance/time = 74.98/4.6 = 16.3 m/s
