Question

4) Don't bother actually reading the very recent (this month!) attached article on the "Infinia Solar System" solar collector; it has very little information. The website doesn't have much either BUT it states that at an air temperature of 20°C, and i sunlight (850 W/m2) the closed-cycle stirling engine at the focus of the collector's light can produce 3000 Watts of electrical energy. The dish has a radius of 2.35 meters. What must the minimum temperature of the hotspot produced at the focus be in order for this information to make sense?

Explanation / Answer

assuming maximum efficiency of carnot efficiency,

output/input=(hot temperature-cold temperature)/hot temperature

==>3000/(850*pi*2.35^2)=(T-20)/(T+273)

==>(T-20)/(T+273)=0.20343

==>T-20=0.20343*T+55.536

==>T=94.827
