Question
Examine the curve below which is a measurement of energy cost of flight in a 15 gram bird.
1. What is the minimum cost of transport in this bird? (make sure you include appropriate units in your answer)
2. If this bird has fat reserves of 2 grams, how many miles can it fly using only it's fat reserves?
3. How many joules of heat (minimum) will it produce?
4. If the fat is triglycerides, then a reasonable chemical formula is C51H140O6. Using only this fat, what will be the Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER) of the bird when it is flying?
5. How many L of CO2 will it produce during it's flight? (be careful about units)

1. From different papers, it is given that- 1000 ml of O2 releases approximately 4.82 to 5 kcal of energy. The minimum oxygen expenditure of this bird is at the speed of 9m/s - 1.42 mLO2/g.h
1000 ml gives 5kCal, hence 1.42 mL gives (5/1000)* 1.42 = 0.0071kCal
2. 1g of fat releases 9kCal of energy, hence 2 g releases 18kCal energy approximately.
5 kCal is released when 1000 ml of O2 is utilized
or, 18 kCal is released when (1000/5)*18= 3600 mL of O2
