Question
The temperatures of three Pyrex glass blocks are raised by the same amount. The sizes (length x width x height) of the blocks are
block 1: 2D x 2D x D
block 2: D x D x 2D
block 3: 2D x D x 2D
with D = 5 cm.
e) For each of the blocks, calculate the change in height when the temperature is raised by 100oC.(answers are delta h1=0.0015cm,delta h2 = 0.003cm,delta h3 = 0.003cm)

Explanation / Answer
= (1/L)(L/T) and for Pyrex is about 3 * 10-6 K-1. Solving for L,
L = L T
Block 1 is 0.05 m high, and blocks 2 and 3 are 0.10 m high. So,
(3 * 10-6 K-1)(0.05 m)(100 K) = 15 * 10-6 m = 15 * 10-4 cm = 0.0015 cm for block 1
(3 * 10-6 K-1)(0.10 m)(100 K) = 30 * 10-6 m = 30 * 10-4 cm = 0.003 cm for blocks 2 and 3
