Question

The system shown in the figure below consists of a mass M = 4.7-kg block resting on a frictionless horizontal ledge. This block is attached to a string that passes over a pulley, and the other end of the string is attached to a hanging m = 2.3-kg block. The pulley is a uniform disk of radius 8.0 cm and mass 0.60 kg. (a) What is the acceleration of each block? acceleration of M = 4.7 kg ____ m/s2 acceleration of m = 2.3 kg ____ m/s2 (b) What is the tension in the string? small tension ____ N large tension ____ N

Explanation / Answer

Let T1 nad T2 be the tension in the String of larger and Smaller

Therefore

T1 = Ma

T1 = 4.7a

Also

T2 = mg + ma

By Considering Rolling

(T2 - T1)*R = I = (1/2*0.60*(8*10^-2)*a)

(2.3*9.8 + 2.3*a - 4.7a) = 0.5*0.60*a

Therefore

Acceleration , a = 8.348 m/sec^2

Tension in the String attatched to 4.7Kg = 4.7*8.348

= 39.2356 N

Tension in the String attatched to 2.3Kg = (2.3*9.8) + 2.3*8.348

= 41.7404 N
