Question
In the hydraulic system shown in the figure below the piston on the left has a diameter of 4.9 cm and a mass of 1.7 kg. The piston on the right has a diameter of 12 cm and a mass of 3.7 kg. If the density of the fluid is 750 kg/m3, what is the height difference h between the two pistons? m
In the hydraulic system shown in the figure below the piston on the left has a diameter of 4.9 cm and a mass of 1.7 kg. The piston on the right has a diameter of 12 cm and a mass of 3.7 kg. If the density of the fluid is 750 kg/m3, what is the height difference h between the two pistons? mExplanation / Answer
on the right side, the pressure at the point h distance below the weight is given by
pressure at the point of the weight +gh =p1
taking g=9.8m/s2
now since the pressure at the same height should be same,so
pressure on the left side at the weight = p1
1.7g/(d/2)2 =3.7g/(D/2)2 +750*g*h
=>901.36=327.11+750*h
=>574.25=750*h
=>h=.766
or h=76.6 cm ................ cheers!!
