Question

A silty soil is tested for permeability using the falling head method. The diameter of the soil column is 8.0 cm, and the length of the soil column is 16.0 cm. The hydraulic head loss ocross the soil specimen is 120.0 cm at the begining of the test; at the end of 15 min, the hydraulic head loss across the soil specimen is 90.0 cm. The cross-section area of the burette that connects to the upstream of the soil specimen is 2.0 cm^2. What is the permeability of the soil specimen in cm/sec?

Please answer the question completly and show all work and steps.

Explanation / Answer

the equation to calculate the value of permeability by falling head test is:-

k= 2.3{(a*L)/(A*t)}*log(h1/h2)....................(1)

where; k = permeability of the soil sample ; a= cross-sectional area of the burette=2 cm^2 ; L = lengthof the sample = 16 cm

A = cross- sectional area or area perpendicular to flow of the sample = 50.27 cm^2

t = time in seconds= 900 seconds

h1 =initial head =120 cm and h2 = final head = 90 cm

putting all the above values in (1) , we get

k= 2.0324*10^-4 cm/sec
