Jig Design A tourist trap in Kentucky sells souvenir "outhouses trapezoidal pieces of wood appropriately painted including the quarter-moon in the door In an effort to upgrade perceived quality, the manufacturer wants to carve out the quarter-moon instead of just painting it on The carving tool used in a drill press is shaped like a cylinder with a cone removed from the bottom When this tool is brought partway down on a sloped surface, it cuts out an arc that comes to a point at each end just like the quarter-moon on quad paper (1/4 squares) or using CAD show at least three views of a simple wooden iig (that can be held on a horizontal drill press table with C-clamps to hold a raw "outhouse" board while guiding the tool to carve the moon shape. It should be relatively foolproof once clamped in proper position with the drill feed stop set Consider the dimensions given below to be accurate The crude diagrams just reveal approximate shapes Outhouse (not to scale) Cross section of tool (not to scale) Width: 2 1/2 Thickness 3/4" Shank diam. 1/4 Left side 6 high I Right side 4" high Cutter diam 3/4 Roof straight line Cutter length. 4 I I I To cut the quarter-moon properly (1) the outhouse board should be tilted 5 degrees left side high (2) the tool axis should be centered 1 from the right side and 3 from the bottom measured along the wood surface) and (3) lower the tool about 1/4 past first contact with the surface Once the jig is properly positioned and clamped, and the drill press stop is set, the operator merely follows this sequence repeatedly 1. lear any sawdust that would prevent proper seating 2. Insert a trapezoidal blank 3. Lower the cutting tool to the stop to cut the moon shape A. Release the tool feed 5. Remove the finished piece
