Explanation / Answer

1) Fish oil supplements contain high levels of vitamin A and D along with omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamin A and D are fat soluble vitamins that do pass out in the urine like water soluble vitamins. Instead, they accumulate in the body and lead to a serious condition called hypervitaminosis. A normal fish oil supplement of 4 gram contains 4501IU of vitamin A which is 90% of the FDA recommended daily value and 450IU of vitamin D which is 113% of the FDA recommended daily value. While, the content of omega-3 fatty acid is 888mg. 3000mg of omega-3 fatty acid can be taken per day safely. Hence, taking fish oil supplements for omega-3 fatty acid is not advisable, because a person trying increase the omega-3 fatty acid dosage may eventually overdose himself with vitamin A and D resulting in hypervitaminosis.
