Deuterostomes Oligochaete Polychaete Echiuran 30.4 Platyhelminth Chaetognath PROTO Vs Onychophoran Nematomorph FiG. 5-Summary tree showing the findings of this study, derived from combined LSU +SSU rRNA gene sequences. Numbers represent ME bootstrap percentages (from fig. 14) over I values (relative sup- port-versus-conflict indices from column 1 of table 3); and key mor- phological characters are mapped onto some important nodes. Note that the position of chaetognaths within protostomes is treated as un- certain (?). As for sipunculans, evidence from mitochondrial genes suggests they are akin to annelids (Boore and Staton 2002), although our rRNA data do not reveal this. For documentation of the morpho- logical characters see Nielsen (1995, spiral cleavage and protostomy); Schmidt-Rhaesa (1998, aflagellate sperm); Schmidt-Rhaesa et al (1998, dorsal heart); Giribet et al. (2000, haemal system); McHugh (2000, chaetae), and Peterson and Eernisse (2001, protrusile chaetae).Explanation / Answer
The figure represents an evolutionary tree, the key morphological characters of each phyllum have been mapped. The values mentioned in percentages are bootstrap values. For example the phyllum Nematode and Nematomorph both have similay morphological chacracter of an aflagellated sperm. In a second example the Onychophoran and Arthropods noth have evolved having a dorsal heart.
The evolutionary tree provides information about how morphological characters have been used to classify the animals. For example the proto and dueterostomes further evolved to have either moulting or spiral clevage. The Phylum Priapulan, Onychophoran, Arthropods, Nematomorphs and Nematodes all exhibit a moulting phenomenon.
