Hi,
Testing for HIV is very easy and safe. There are many centres in city where one can get the testing done. Many dfferent type of tests are available, which the patient can chose depending on requirement.
1. NAT: Nucleic acid test. Here the test looks for actual virus in the blood. This test is expensive and not routinely done. This is most accurate in the early stages of infection.
2. Antigen/antibody test. This test looks for boh antibodies against HIV and its antigens. This detects the p24 antigen which is detectable once the HIV infects. This test can be done atleast within 3 - 12 weeks from the time of infection.
3. Rapid tests; These tests can be done by the person himself at home. They are kit based tests.
- Rapid antigen screening test: These tests are fast and give you results in 30 min or less.
- oral fluid antibody self test: This test can give you results in 20 min. The oral swab is collected and tested for HIV.
It is a common occurance to see patients with STD to concerrenty get infected with HIV. Basically it is to do with the habit ( unsafe sex, sex with multiple partners, anonymous partners). A sore of infection from STD may allow HIV infections that would otherwise was stoped by intact skin. HIV infected patients pass on the virus more easily when they have urethritis.
