The more empty calories you consume, the more weight you're likely to gain. In fact, drinking beverages with high-fructose corn syrup has been linked to an increased risk of obesity, according to a 2004 article published in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Carrying too much excess weight puts you at a higher risk for heart disease and stroke. Consumption of high-fructose corn syrup might also increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes and high triglyceride levels.
