Question
A few students from this class discover and fix up a UFO over winter break. Unfortunately, it explodes during test flights, while hovering perfectly still over Verrazano straights, about 300m above ground. Nobody gets hurt but it is important to find all three fragments. Two heavier fragments, 300kg and 700kg each, were recovered half a mile North and half a mile West, respectively. Where is the third fragment? a) Start by computing velocities of fragments 1 and 2 immediately after the explosion b) Draw the diagram to help yourself figure out the direction of travel of fragment 3 c) Assume fragment three was ~100kg and compute its speed d) Recalling part (a) above you can find the distance travelled by fragment 3Explanation / Answer
a) time taken = sqrt(2*300/9.8)
= 7.82 s
for 300 kg v1 = 0.5/7.82 =0.0639 mile/s towards north.
for 700 kg, v2 = 0.0639 mile/s towards west.
v3 = 300*0.0639/100 south + 700*0.0639/100 east mile/s
position = 3*0.0639*7.82 south + 7*0.0639*7.82 east
= 1.5 mile south + 3.5 mile east
