Question

Find the magnitude of the force that the -8.0 nC charge at the origin exerts on the -2.5 nC point charge is placed at the point P in Fig. 21.19.

Find the direction of the force that the -8.0 nC charge at the origin exerts on the -2.5 nC point charge is placed at the point P in Fig. 21.19.

Find the magnitude of the force that the -2.5 nC charge exerts on the -8.0 nC charge.

Find the direction of the force that the -2.5 nC charge exerts on the -8.0 nC charge.

21.19 Our sketch for this problem. q=-8.0 nC O,S r= 2.0 m : 1.6 m 1

Explanation / Answer

As only the magnitude of the force is asked in the question

we have F = k*q1*q2 / r2

part A

force on -2.5 nC due to -8.0 nC

net distance between them r = 2 meter and k = 9 * 10^9

F = k(-8 nC)(-2.5 nC) / 22 = 4.5 x 10^(-8) N

Part B

force will be equal and opposite in direction to that of above calculated force

F = 4.5 x 10^(-8) N
