Question
Two charged objects exert a 5.0-N force on each other when separated by 1.5 m .
A)Find the product of the two charges.
B) Determine the force that one charged object exerts on the other when the separation is doubled.
C)Determine the force that one charged object exerts on the other when the separation is reduced by one-half.
D)Determine the force that one charged object exerts on the other when the magnitude of one charge is reduced by one-half.
E)Determine the force that one charged object exerts on the other when both charges are doubled.
Explanation / Answer
a) By coulomb's law F = kq1q2 /r^2
q1×q2 = F×r^2/k (k = 8.98*10^9 Nm^2/C^2 )
= 5 × (1.5)^2 /8.98*10^9
= 1.25 *10^-9 C^2
B) when charges remaining same
F1/F2 =( r2 /r1 )^2
When r1 = 2× r2
F1 = F2 (r2 /r1 )^2 = 5*(1/2)^2 = 1.25 N
C) when r1 = r2 /2
F1 = 5× (2)^2 = 20 N
D) when separation remaining same
Fa /Fb = ( q1*q2) a / (q1*q2) b
If (q1) a = (q1) b /2
Fa = 5 × 1/2 = 2.5 N
E) when both charges are doubled
q1a = 2× q1b and q2a =2 ×q2b
Fa = 5 ×4 = 20 N
