Question
From the image above, I need to answer the following questions:
1a.. What the direction of the force that the -2mC charge (the one on the right) exerts on the 4mC charge (which is at the origin)
I just want to make sure I am thinking about it right, I have that it is in the positive x direction.
b. What is the magnitude of the FORCE that the -2mC charge exerts on the 4mC at the origin?
c. Calculate the x-component and y component of the net electric field at (0,2) due to the four charges shown.
I don't even really know where to start with this one. I was thinking of summing up the electric fields for each of the charges (the +2 and -2), but I don't know what value to use for r.
Explanation / Answer
a) you are right, it is in the positive x direction.
b) magnitude = 8.99*109 * 2*10-6 * 4*10-6/(4.0)2 N = 4.50*10-3 N
c) By symmetry, the electric fields at (0, 2) due to two +4C charges cancel each other.
the y components of electric fields at (0, 2) due to ±2 C charges cancel each other.
the x components of electric fields at (0, 2) due to ±2 C charges add each other with magnitude of
2*8.99*109 * 2*10-6/(4.02 + 2.02) * 4.0/(4.02 + 2.02) = 1.61*103 N/C
in +x direction
