Question
An irregular neutral conductor has a hollow cavity inside of it and is insulated from its surroundings. An excess charge of 20.0 nC is sprayed onto this conductor.( all answer are Q= ? nC)Part A.) Find the charge on the inner surface of the conductor.
Part B.) Find the charge on the outer surface of the conductor.
Part C.) Without touching the conductor, a charge of -14.0 nC is inserted into the cavity through a small hole in the conductor. Find the charge on the inner surface of the conductor in this case.
Part D.) Find the charge on the outer surface of the conductor in this case.
Explanation / Answer
PROPERTY OF CONDUCTOR: The whole charge resides on the outer surface of the conductor (A) According to the property of conductor the charge on the inner surface of the conductor is zero (B) The charge on the outer surface of the conductor is Q = 20 nC (C) If we place the charge(q = -14 nC) inside the cavity of the conductor, an equal and opposite charge induced on the inner surface of the conductor. Hence, the charge on the inner surface of the conductor is q = + 14 nC (D) An equal charge of (q = -14 nC) will add to the outer surface of the conductor. Hence, the charge on the outer surface of the conductor is q' = Q + q = 20 nC + ( -14 nC) = 6 nCRelated Questions
