Question

4 Consider two convex lensos. The first lens has a focal length of 5 cm. The second lens has a focal length of 10 cm and is placed 15 cm behind the first one. The object is placed 8 the final image in relation to the second lens? (b) What is the total magnification? Location (3 point) Figure out the location of the intermediate image after passing through the first lens: Figure out the location of the final image after passing through the second lens. (Be careful what value you use as do herel) Magnification (2 point) Calculate the magnification due to the first lens and the second lens separately. Then calculate the combined

Explanation / Answer

here,

4)

for the first lens

focal length , f1 = 5 cm

object distance , do1 = 8.5 cm

let the image disatnce be di1

using the lens formula

1/f1 = 1/di1 + 1/do1

1/5 = 1/di1 + 1/8.5

solving for di1

di1 = 12.1 cm

for the seccond lens

the object distance , do2 = 1.5 - di1 = - 10.6 cm

focal length , f2 = 10 cm

let the image distance be di2

using the lens formula

1/di2 + 1/do2 = 1/f2

1/di2 - 1/10.6= 1/10

solving for di2

di2 = 5.14 cm

the final image is 5.14 cm from the seccond lens

b)

the magnification , m = (-di2/do2) *( - di1 /do1)

m = ( 12.1 /8.5) * ( - 5.14 /10.6)

m = - 0.69
