Question

Calculate the average speed of the Moon around the Earth. The Moon has a period of revolution of 27.3 days and an average dis- tance from the Earth of 3.84 x 10* m. 3. 0.0000116 Hz 4. 12 Hz 5. 1 Hz 6. 24 Hz 7. 60 Hz 8. 0.0167 Hz 1. 8.83789 x 10"m/s 2. 584000 m/s 3. 3688.5 m/s 4.61374.2 m/s 5. 3.68245 x 10° m/s 6. None of these 7. 2054.6 m/s 8. 1022.9 m/s 9. 2045.8 m/s Question 10, chap 5, sect 4. part I of 1 10 points If you fill a bucket partially with water and swing it fast enough in a circle over your head the water will stay in the bucket even when it is upside down. Which statement is not true? 1. The acceleration of the water is greater 2. The bucket has a downward force on the than g water in it. 3. The acceleration of the water is less than 9. Question 11, chap 5, sect 1. part 1 of 1 10 points What is the frequency of the minute hand of a clock? 1. 0.000278 Hz 2. 3600 Hz

Explanation / Answer

10) Ans: (3) The acceleration of the water is less than g.

Gravity is pulling the water down, but the water is, due to the circular motion, accelerating towards the center of the circular arc. When the bucket is upside down, the bucket accelerates downward faster than pulls on the water, so gravity does not separate the bucket and the water.

11) Ans: (1) 0.000278 Hz

Period = 1 / (1/60s) = 60 seconds

Frequency = 1/60 Hz

Edit addition: My original answer is wrong. Nathan gave the correct answer.

The period of the minute hand on a clock = The time required for the minute hand to complete one cycle = (time) / (1 cycle) = 1 Hour

Period = 1 hour

Frequency expressed in Hertz is equal to cycles per second = (1cycle / 1hour) X (1hour / 3600 seconds) = (1 cycle) / (3600 seconds) = (1/ 3600) Hz = 0.000278 Hz
