Question
10. Chemical analogues of GTP have been made that contain a sulfur in place of one of the phosphates of GTP. The resulting molecule acts like GTP, but cannot be hydrolyzed. Predict the effect of these molecules in a cell where the beta-adrenergic receptor is activated 11. A mutant liver cell is found that has an excessive amount of phosphodiesterase. Predict the way in which this cell would differ from normal liver cells. 12. A mutant cell is found which contains an insulin receptor that cannot autophosphorylate. Predict the behavior of this cell compared to an unmutated cell.Explanation / Answer
10. GTP hydrolysis is necessary to carry out the signal transduction, for example beta adrenergic receptors. When hormone comes and bind the receptor, GTP is activated and it should be hydrolyzed. If GTP is not hydrolyzed, then the signal transduction will not take place and secondary messengers will not be activated. Hence hormone will bind but will not show its effect.
