A third type of photosynthesis is called crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM). In CAM plants, the stomates open at night rather than in the day, reducing diurnal water loss through transpiration (Ting 1987). Atmospheric CO2 is incorporated into an acid at night, then released inside the leaf during the day and assimilated via an ordinary Calvin cycle that is powered by the light reactions. Many CAM plants are desert succulents such as those in the genus Agave,K alanchoaen d Sedum.( Foyer 1984;S alisbury& Ross 1985), but CAM metabolism has been found in more than 30 families of anthophyta (Ting 1987). CAM mechanisms of photosynthesis are particularly adapted to arid and semiarid environments and to drought conditions where water loss can be detrimental, even lethal, to the plant. Studies indicate that CAM plants may shift back to normal C-3 photosynthesis during times of less adverse environmental conditions (Ting 1987; Foyer 1984). The other three forms of photosynthesis show slight, but distinct metabolic and physiologic variations and gradations of the C-4 and CAM photosynthetic mechanisms (Black & Vines 1987)
