Question
In most cases, a car's speedometer works by monitoring the rate of rotation of the tires. A specific tire circumference is programmed in to allow distances to be determined as recorded on the odometer. How would installing a larger tire effect the speedometer and odometer readings? Will you be going faster or slower than the readout? Will the car put on more or less miles than it actually does? If a classmate has claimed and answered these questions come up with another example where the circumference of a rotating object plays a big role in how it moves or if we can use the magnitude or change in that variable to our advantage.
Explanation / Answer
As we know odometer and speedometer both reads the tire motion to provide us details about the speed and distance covered.
On installing a larger tire. both readings will be affected-
Odometer: It will show less distance is covered as it will take less revolution to cover a fixed distance.
spedometer: it wil show slower as revolution per unit time will be less for a fixed distance.
