Question

A student is using a resonance tube and determines that three resonances occur at distances of L0.333 m, L2-0.554 m, and L3 -0.761 m below the open end of the tube. The frequency of the tuning fork used is 7.68 x 102 Hz. (Enter your answers to at least three significant figures.) HINT (a) Find the wavelength (in m) using distances L2 and L1 A2-1 = (b) Find the wavelength (in m) using distances Ly and L2 3-2- (c) Find the average wavelength (in m). avg (d) Find the average speed of sound (in m/s) m/s avg

Explanation / Answer

The first resonance length is occured at, L1 = ?/4 = 0.333 m

The second resonance length is occured at, L2 = 3?/4 = 0.554 m

The third resonance length is occured at, L3 = 5?/4 = 0.761 m

From the above, L2 - L1 = ?/2

L3 - L2 = ?/2

L3 - L1 = ?

Use any one of the above to find out the value of wavelength.

    Then we get ? = 0.428 m

And for the problem, the frequency, f = 768 Hz

We have a relation between the frequency, wavelength and the velocity of the sound as

          v = f? = 768 * 0.428 = 328.70 m/s
