Question

Two particles each with charge +1.66 µC are located on the x axis. One is at x = 1.00 m, and the other is at x = -1.00 m.
(a) Determine the electric potential on the y axis at y = 0.590 m. kV

(b) Calculate the change in electric potential energy of the system as a third charged particle of -2.87 µC is brought from infinitely far away to a position on the y axis at y = 0.590 m. J

Can someone show me how to answer this question for me, and show me all the steps for it, I am trying to understand it, and I keep getting it wrong. The steps for answering the question are more important than the answer. Thank you in advance.

Explanation / Answer

V=V1+V2=2kQ/R Where R=sqrt(.59^2+1^2)=1.161m V=25.74kV W=q(Vinf-V)=-2.87e-06*(0-25.74kV) W=0.074J
