Question
A wood block of mass M1 =10 kg rests on a concrete slab of mass M2 =40 kg The slab rests on a frictionless surface. Thee coefficient of static friction between the slab and block is 0.6. The coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.4. A horizontal force P is applied to the block. For both cases below, find the horizontal acceleration of each mass and the force of friction (0 between them. (Careful! Remember that fstatic, is a variable force 11k Coefficient only gives you its maximum possible value.) Case I: P = 80 N. Case 2: P= 40 N.Explanation / Answer
a)
force require to move system = mg
let g = 10
F req = 10x 10 x 0.6 = 60 N
here it is 80 N so m1 block will move
a1 = 80-40 / 10 = 4 m/s2 wrt block m2
now with respect to ground
a1 = 1.6 +4 = 5.6 m/s2
a2 = 80 / 50 = 1.6 m/s2
b) p = 40 N
small block will not move wrt large block as 60 N is req as max static friction force = 60 N
here
f = 40 N
a1 = 40/50 = 0.8 m/s2
a2 = 40/50 = 0.8 m/s2
