Question

Psalms 31:10 describes how despair and other negative feelings take a toll on our physical well being. There are many hypothalamic disorders that result in physical maladies such as wasting away (cachexia), obesity, sleep disturbances, dehydration, as well as a wide range of emotional disorders, which cause the body great harm over time.

Similarly, in Ecclesiastes 8:1, Solomon describes how anxiety, anger, sorrow and frustration can harden one’s face, but enjoyment of life and attaining wisdom will reverse these conditions.

Explanation / Answer

Stress leads to release of excessive cortisol so that the body is able to respond appropriately to the stress. The release of the cortisol hormone is controlled by three regions which are the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and adrenal gland. When there is high stress level the cortisol release is stimulated by release of the corticotrophin releasing hormones which triggers the pituitary gland to release another hormone which is the adrenocorticotropic hormone. If there is too much of cortisol in the body it might lead to adverse conditions and body effect. It might causing Cushing syndrome.

Cushing syndrome is caused due to presence of large number of steroid hormones like cortisol. Some of the common symptoms are obesity, fat deposition above collar bone and behind neck portion, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, osteoporosis, depression, excess growth of hair, erectile dysfunction etc.

Long term stress impacts the endocrine system due to release of the high amount of human cortisol hormone. Stress impacts the endocrine system by affecting the immune system. It leads to problems like dilation of pupils, increased heart rate, constricted arterioles, glycolysis Tec.
