a. Calculate the additive and dominance effect for this locus. Describe the type of dominance this locus exhibits.

b. Calculate the additive and dominance variance due to this locus assuming p=0.4.

c. If the total phenotypic variance for this population is 5000, what is the heritability in the broad sense? What is the narrow sense heritability?

Explanation / Answer

a) Condition 1 MM= a= p2=110, Mm=d=2pq=200, mm= -a=q2=40, p=0.4, q=0.6 ,dominant genetic effect value taken for calculation= 0.25, additive genetic effect value for calculation=0.5.

MM =110/350=0.31, Mm=200/350=0.57, mm=40/350=0.11 same calculation for the other conditions.

b) VA = additive variance= (1-2p)2= [1- 2 (0.4)]2= [1-2 x0.16]=[1-0.32]= 0.68 answer.

VP= phenotypic variation=[1-2pq]= [1-2 x 0.6 x0.4]= [1-0.24]= 0.76 answer.

c) N=5000, heritability in broad sense= VG= VA+ VD= 0.68+0.76=1.44

heritability in broad sense= h2= VG/VP= 1.44/0.76=1.89 answer.

heritability in narrow sense=h2= VA/VP= 0.68/0.76=0.89 answer.

heritability in narrow sense=
