Question B.3 (a) Highlight the main sources of heat generation which may cause machine tool structures to distort and explain how such thermal distortions may be reduced. [6 marks] (b) With the aid of sketches explain the ways in which grinding energy may be dissipated from the grinding zone [9 marks] (c) In the context of grinding explain how backlash may be minimised. [4 marks] (d) With the aid of a Limit Chart explain how the infeed rate and workpiece velocity may be optimised during the centreless grinding process. Your Limit Chart should include the following: Process boundaries Safe working region Optimum machining position [6 marks] [25 marks in total]Explanation / Answer
a)
The main sources of heat generation which may cause distortion of machine tool structures briefly divided into two types i.e. External and Internal
In general, all the above sources are able to create an impact to the thermal distortion. First on the part it’s in contact with, which is spread inside the machine tool.
How to reduce the thermal distortion:-
In Production processes the Continuous usage of a machine tool causes heat generation typically at the moving elements, which results in distortion of the machine structure. These thermal distortions can contribute a significant percentage of the total error in a machine tool structure. There are a number of design solutions available to the machine tool structure builder to reduce thermal distortions including the liquid cooling systems, low thermal expansion materials and symmetric machine tool structures.
