Question
How does the perceptual process impact the communication process? What factors make perception subjective (individual to each of us)? Which one has the biggest influence and why? What is the most challenging step (not type of listening!) in the listening process and why? Pick one concept we covered in Unit I that you think will make the biggest impact on your own communication. Explore why learning about this concept has impacted you and how you will incorporate what you've learned into your own life.Explanation / Answer
1. Perception in communication determines how one will communicate and how they will receive information from another person. Perception in Communication is based on three elements. Your perception of others is the product of how you view yourself, that you remember things better if you relate to self and that you tend to ignore that which contrasts with your view of self.
Perception is at the hearts of communication. Nothing is clear in and of itself but in some context for some person. Everybody perceives things differently. That does not mean that one person is right and the other is wrong. It does mean that communication between two individuals who have different perspectives require more understanding, negation, persuation and tolerance of those differences. The role of communication is to convey a message to your company for that perception.
2. Factors influence perception :
The perceiver: attitudes, motives, interests, experiences, expectations
The target: novelty, notions, sounds, size, background, similarities
The situation: time, work settings, social situation
Biggest influence is the situation because of different settings in social networks.
3. The Listening process includes different steps :
a. Receiving
b. Attending
c. Understanding
d. Responding
e. Remembering
In my view, the most challenging step in listening process is responding because responses seek clarifications and for clarifications you should clearly understood that thing which you have attended. It is form of feedback that completes the communication process.
5. Attitude made the biggest impact on my own communication in both positive and negative ways. People with extreme points of view may find it hard to see one another's perspective because each has the attitude that the other must be wrong without taking time to analyze the situation.
