4. (a) The output of a proportional controller is not just on or off but can be adjusted to any value between 0% and 100% of the power.
The control direction is significant as in the case of on-off. The inverse action alters the output from 100% to 0% as the process increases while heating and while cooling the action goes from 0% to 100%.
When correctly tuned, the controller can regulate its output to match the power required to keep the process stable at the set point, which cannot be achieved by an On-Off controller.
